How Can Lost and Found Pets Help Animal Rescues and Shelters Ring in the New Year?

| Uncategorized | December 29, 2011

The answer is by using this blog to remind everyone to donate to shelters and rescues now - and it does not have to be with a personal check.

In the coming days, why not start a tradition of your own by donating to a local animal shelter or rescue? Make it a family event or your own personal cause. Writing a check for that end-of-the-year donation is always welcome, but you can also donate in other (easy) ways. Nearly all shelters and rescues, including bird/parrot rescues, have websites that include a “wish list”. Such “wish lists” generally request quality moist and dry pet food, gently used cloth towels, blankets and sheets (especially this time of year in the colder states), leashes/collars, white paper towels and LOTS OF TOYS – yes, shelters and rescues have a real need for food and TOYS (big and small for dogs, cats and birds) to keep sheltered pets waiting for adoption relaxed, engaged and as comfortable as possible. So, look around your home for the gently used items, extra food items and maybe pick up a new TOY or two – then drive to your local shelter or rescue and feel great about it! Shelters readily welcome these donations and the pets NEED THEM.

As always, we here at Lost and Found Pets America (http://lostandfoundpetsamerica.com/ ) give our most sincere thanks to our website, Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/lostandfoundpetsamerica ) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/findlostpets)  network members who together, are bringing lost and found pets home nationwide! How Can Lost and Found Pets Help A City’s Great Pet Campaign to Combat Pet Abusers?

| Uncategorized | November 16, 2011

Baltimore's Show Your Soft Side Campaign

The short answer is by using this blog to help promote it. Cities across the country take note and develop your own great ad campaign to target pet abusers or promote the ad campaign you already have. Baltimore City, Maryland is doing just that. For starters, click here to see Baltimore’s Facebook Wall page for the ad campaign aptly named Show Your Soft Side .

Both Baltimore City’s local newspaper, the Baltimore Sun, located on the east coast and the  Seattle DogSpot blog, located on the west coast, and lots of pet advocacy blogs in between are covering this very important ad campaign featuring local baseball, football and mixed martial arts professionals who are lending their name and image to help combat pet abuse in Baltimore. According to the Baltimore ad campaign’s Facebook Wall page, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake created The Mayor’s Anti-Animal Abuse Task Force in July 2009 after a young pit-bull terrier – who was subsequently called Phoenix – was doused with gasoline and set on fire in broad daylight in West Baltimore. On November 3, 2010, the Mayor signed the Anti-Animal Abuse Commission into law with the goal of helping the city prevent and prosecute animal cruelty, including dog fighting.

So what is Baltimore’s Show Your Soft Side ad campaign? The Wall page describes it this way:

“Show Your Soft Side” is a campaign developed to combat the alarming incidence of animal abuse in Baltimore. Many of the more horrific cases have been perpetrated by teens, thus leading the Mayor’s Anti-Animal Abuse Advisory Commission to look for ways to change the mindset of young people who often view the maiming and torturing of defenseless dogs and cats as a sign of “toughness” or “manhood”. The campaign puts forth a very different message – a message that subtly shows that “being a man” has many facets to it, including a “soft side” when it comes to animals. The goal is to reach kids early because research shows that kids who abuse animals soon graduate to even more violent crimes. Featuring acknowledged hard men of Baltimore with their pets, the campaign’s posters, billboards and print ads make the point that only a punk would hurt a cat or dog.

Every city needs a campaign like this one. Even in tough economic times, Baltimore has made it a priority to enlist public figures to help combat pet and animal abuse. So what’s stopping other cities from doing the same? The cost of mounting a like campaign is nominal, considering the athletes who are helping donated their time and likeness. We salute the Baltimore Ravens’ Jarret Johnson (and his dog Tucker), the Baltimore Orioles’ Adam Jones (and his dog Missy) and Mixed Martial Arts Fighter John Rallo (and his cat Doobie)! You, the Mayor and all those who made the campaign a reality and renew it yearly are pet heroes!

Once again, we thank all of our site supporters and Facebook Fans for being part of our national network!  Be sure to visit our website (www.lostandfoundpetsamerica.com) and our Facebook Wall page to help lost and found pets nationwide!

How Can Lost and Found Pets Help Rescue Pit Bulls and Change Public Perception About Them?

| Uncategorized | July 24, 2011

Kozmo

The short answer is, by using this blog to share information about a terrific website and it’s founder dedicated to doing just that.

The mere term “pit bull” stirs negative emotion, not because of the breed itself but because of what an inhumane element of society has done to the reputation of the breed and how they have used them. This is a post of hope for the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Michael Mountain is the founder of StubbyDog.org. His website reads as follows:

StubbyDog is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), focused on changing public perceptions of pit bulls. Our vision is a world where every pit bull has the right to a good life.
Our mission is to help people rediscover pit bulls as lifelong friends.

Recently, Michael and his website were featured in the September 2011 issue of Dog Fancy Magazine (yes, it’s an early edition; no, this is not an affiliate link). According to the article titled “Website Goes To Work For Pit Bulls”, Michael reports roughly one million “pit bull-type” dogs are euthanized each year in the United States. To put that in perspective, that’s the total estimated human population of Tampa, FL, Atlanta, GA and Scottsdale, AZ combined. If the number is just a tad low, you can add all the residents of Sunnyvale, CA to the mix. That is as heartbreaking as it is shocking…but there is good news.

Michael makes an excellent point that until people realize there’s so much great about the breed, “…all the rescues in the world aren’t going to make that much difference.” His next move is fascinating and may just change the “pit-bull type” dog’s image in a massive and amazing way. He envisions enlisting the T.V. world to make these dogs T.V. stars, thereby changing how we view these breeds. His point in the article is excellent, when he reminds us “Rin Tin Tin changed the whole perception of German Shepherd Dogs in the 1960′s…Everyone saw this wonderful, loving, heroic dog.”

So why should you be helping Michael and his .org? Click here to read about Michael or just read the following excerpt from his website:

Michael Mountain: Editor-in-chief – One of the founders and past President of Best Friends Animal Society – the largest sanctuary for companion animals and flagship of the successful campaign to bring an end to the killing of millions of homeless pets in shelters every year. After the arrest of Michael Vick, Best Friends led the drive to save the dogs from being killed, and all but one of them were indeed saved, with Best Friends taking most of those. Several were featured on the Best Friends show Dogtown on the National Geographic Channel and have appeared around the country. Today, nonetheless, due to public fears and misperceptions, pit bulls remain the single most intractable challenge for shelters around the country. More than a million are still being killed every year – hence Michael’s new focus through StubbyDog.

Click here to read about the impressive advocates he has assembled, coast-to-coast, to mount this life-saving effort. This list is beyond impressive. Also, be sure to visit the site to learn what you never knew about these great pets. The site features news, stories, a blog and information on the breed(s).

We salute Michael Mountain, his website and his team for rescuing these pets and believing, on such a large-scale, that their lives can be better and for also believing that we are all capable of seeing them as the wonderful pets they can be. We hope in some small way, this blog post helps the cause to change public perception and showcase these dogs as “new friends” that need loving homes. Join us in saluting Michael and helping his cause!

As always, we thank our Facebook Fans and Lost & Found Pets America Network for not only helping lost pets get back home, but for also helping pets like these find loving homes!
